  1. Simon Sinek's TEDx on "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" was stirring and re-affirmed my commitment to professional development. It is an 18 minute segment that every teacher, director, and administrator should take the time to see. His explanation of the "Golden Circle" and its connection to the biology of the brain gave structure to the internal motivation (the WHY) that I feel for desiring to bring professional development opportunities to the early education community here on Kauai.

As a Catholic educator at St. Theresa School it was quite easy to identify with the idea that true "inspiration" is driven by cause, purpose, and belief, not merely by words and wants. We aim to communicate this to our students every day through the gospel and to put their intentions into action. Dr. Sinek goes on to explain that what we do and say is like the proof of what we believe. If we are strong in our purpose (why), then all else will follow and fall into place (what & how). As his talk came to a close I was left to ponder upon the idea of leadership. He says that all leaders have authority or power of some kind, but that those who lead . . . inspire!

    1. Mahalo for your reply to this post! I do agree with his concluding remarks about true leadership inspires others. I also agree that as Catholic school educators we have an advantage over other institutions as our WHY is already built in! In this, the year of Evangelization, I feel even more compelled to spread the WHY to our local communities. We need to keep developing the HOW and the WHAT, but remain focused on the WHY.

God Bless. Since you were the first to respond to this blog, you are the winner of a book, How to Create and Use Rubrics for Formative Assessment and Grading! I will put it in the mail to Saint Theresa Kauai addressed to Berna Souza. Please let me know how you put it to use!
